Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) was a videogame magazine that started in 1989 and lasted (sporadically) until summer of 2014. This feature documentary involves many people from its heyday, from starting up to its eventual selling to Ziff Davis and how that affected the tone of the magazine. It discusses the daily duties of the editors and, well… just watch it!
-Mini FAQ:
Q: Is this associated with the crowdfunded Electronic Gaming Monthly Compendium?
A: Not at all. In fact this isn’t sponsored in any way. We would’ve loved some or maybe all of that 1.8 million dollars, but this has been a passion project of ours since 2018 and everyone gets it for free. We hope that you find this informative as well as entertaining!
Q: Will there be a Blu-ray version?
A: Likely not. Replicating a Blu-ray has gotten worse and worse over the years, especially for small runs (less than 20K units). Quality control is now abysmal as consistent quality is practically non-existent. Batches have more issues and errors even coming from formerly reputable replication houses. I would never consider using duplication (burned discs) instead. Prices have also gone through the roof compared to just a couple of years ago. The quality you get on a Blu-ray is gonna be worse than you see here on Youtube, as Blu-ray can only do 1080i maximum at this frame rate. 4K Blu-ray? Even if replication were magically free, the authoring software is priced beyond the financial means of anyone who is not a decently-funded studio… and it’s priced like that to keep it out of the hands of people like us. Hooray for our studio overlords!
